Measure Overview

The purpose of this measure is to “measure indicators of role orientation related to science identity.” In other words, respondents report the strength of their identity as scientists and their belonging within their field’s scientific community.

This is a five item scale. Calculate the mean scale score (mathematical average) of all the items within the scale for a particular respondent. Higher scores represent higher self-reported science identity for that respondent. Use in postdoc populations would require revalidation.

Evidence of validity tested on (from Estrada et. al. 2011): Participants included a longitudinal panel of 1053 science students from 50 universities across the US in 2005. The undergraduates were primarily in their early twenties (median = 22, range = 18 to 48), female (71%), and split between those of African American (42%) or Hispanic/Latinx (43%) descent. There were similar demographics for graduate students.
