In order to decrease survey burden on respondents, sub-category questions can be asked using skip logic if needed.
Between their 2018 and 2019 surveys, the Consortium Wide Evaluation Plan (CWEP) of the Diversity Program Consortium attempted to address long-standing issues in collecting accurate race and Hispanic origin data, especially given their growing number of respondents choosing “Some Other Race” for race questions. Informed by the Alternative Questionnaire Experiment (2010 AQE), the 2015 National Content Test, and the 2016 American Community Service (ACS) Content Test, the CWEP developed what it termed an AFS-CWEP combined question approach to race and ethnicity. This included introducing a Middle Eastern or North African (MENA) classification which had been previously lacking and introduced granularity that allowed groups that were small within a given sample to be represented. As such, this measure is not validated, but came to represent the way that the DPC, and therefore NRMN U01 studies, collected race and ethnicity data throughout their studies.
